NATURA 2000
Nature protection Environmental management Surveying General GIS

The implementation of the EU habitats directive 92/43 EEC has led to the creation of the Natura 2000 network, the primary initiative for nature conservation in Europe. The pilot project, which is being conducted by IFER, aims to locate habitats in the Czech Republic with a high degree of geographic precision. This is possible using an advanced GIS application developed at IFER, Field-Map. Through the use of a field computer, GIS layers such as arial photos and land maps were used to navigate in the Karlštejn Protected Landscape Area and delineate habitats while in the field. The information collected is directly made available to a GIS database allowing for data processing and mapping.
