IFER is an independent research institute focused on forest production ecology. It provides services in forest inventory, forestry and landscape mapping, GIS, analysis, modeling etc. to clients and partners worldwide. IFER-MMS develops and offers Field-Map, a comprehensive technology for computer aided field data collection. Field-Map product line combines flexible real-time GIS software FieldMap with electronic equipment for mapping and dendrometric measurement. Icelandic Forest Research (IFR), a department of the Icelandic Forest service (Icelandic: Skógraktin) is a state funded institute that performs various research tasks for the forestry sector in Iceland. One of the most important projects is monitoring and reporting on carbon sequestration in Icelandic forests on a national level.

IFR has been using Field-Map software for the national forest inventory (NFI) in Iceland since 2005 and are now working on the third inventory cycle. IFER and IFR started their co-operation on NFI topics, methodological harmonization and technological improvements in the COST E43 platform by 2004 till 2006. The proposed initiative extends several joint activities started there.

The aim of this bilateral cooperation will be an exchange of knowledge, respectively transfer of Icelandic know-how in the application of the specific methodological procedures used in the national forest inventory (transfer from IFR to IFER) and transfer of the latest technological procedures for collection, storage and management of inventory data (transfer from IFER to IFR).
