Vertical crown profile

Before starting to measure vertical crown profile make sure that you have measured tree position, DBH and tree height. Usually crown profile measurements are combined with a transect. Transects can be visualized together with tree crown profiles. First establish the transect across the area of interest (see chapter “Transect”). Then walk to one side and measure the crown profile of trees on the other side of the transect. You can measure several crown profiles for each tree. Vertical crown profile is used for the calculation of the crown surface and the crown volume.

The principle of measuring vertical crown profile

Volume calculation

Crown volume is calculated as definite 3D integral by Simpson method.

Left and right side of the crown profile line is being rotated and volume of rotating body is calculated. Then the mean value of two is used. In case of having several crown profiles per tree the average volume is considered.

In the field go to a position where you can see the entire vertical crown shape

  1. Switch to the tree form

  1. Select a tree
  2. Click the Crown profile tab
  3. Click the Add profile button
  4. Click the Measure profile button

Measure the first point of the crown shape

  1. The first point appears in the view

Measure the other points of the crown profile

  1. The crown shape is drawn in the view
  2. Click the Measure profile button again to stop the process of measuring crown profile

Note:

Expected “boundary” of crown profile (gray area) is derived from a horizontal crown projection
