“Number of lines to be skipped”

Depending on your calliper software, there might be additional information included in the output file (name of the plot, date etc.). You do not want to download this information to the computer and therefore you will skip those lines.

“Columns”

Since most of the electronic callipers can be used for storing user attributes of the measured trees (Species, Height) Field-Map also allows downloading of such items together with DBH. In „Columns“ part of the dialog box assign the order of the column to each particular attribute.

1. Tree number (ID)

2. Diameter at breast height

3. Height

4. Species

5. Three user attributes (these attributes can be used for instance for downloading DBH_1 and DBH_2 when cross measurement is used)

6. Multipliers (edit box is used for multiplication of appropriate data)

Make sure the positions of the trees has been measured

  1. Switch to the Trees form
  2. Click the Calliper button

  1. The dialog box “Read Data from Calliper” appears

Connect the calliper and send data to the computer

  1. A preview of the data appears in the left bottom window
  2. Set the parameters for reading from the text file (depending on your calliper software). NOTE:  Numbers represent columns from a file. For example: Parameter - DBH1_mm is on third column. Each column is separated by tab (tabulator).

Send data from the calliper to the computer again

  1. Tree ID, DBH and other attributes appear in the right column
  2. Click OK

Note: Column species is a number code (ID for a lookup). Field-Map converts this code on appropriate value. For example: number code 50 is Fagus sylvatica etc.

Of course you have to set equipment in the Settings

  1. Data is loaded to the project database
