In Field-Map we distinguish between map and data layers.

Map layer  A collection of similar geographic features, such as rivers, lakes, forests or trees of a particular area for display on a map. This layer refers to a geographical data stored in shapefiles.

Data layer  This is simply a table of attributes without a geographical reference such as weather condition, ownership, etc.
