Naming convention

It is a good practice to use prefixes when naming lookup lists. The reason is to distinguish lookup lists from tables with data.

It is not obligatory to put the prefix before the name of the lookup list, but it is helpful.

It is also very helpful to use an attribute name as a base for the name of associated lookup list (e.g., attribute name Species, lookup list name qSpecies).

We suggest using letters that words do not usually start with (e.g., “x” or “q”).

  1. Click the Add new Attribute button in the Navigation toolbar.
A new row has been added to the end of the list of attributes.
  2. Type the name in the “Attribute name” field and press the Tab key.
  3. Click the dropdown arrow in the “Attribute type” field and select Lookup list (numeric ID).

  1. A list of available lookup lists appears.
  2. Type the name of the lookup list in the “Filename” edit box.
  3. Click OK.

  1. Edit the lookup lists. (To find out more on how to edit lookup lists see the Adding an item to a lookup list chapter.)
