WMS map servers

Web Map Service (WMS) is developed and maintained by Open Geospatial Consortium. WMS enables sharing of geographical information in format of raster maps (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, etc.) in relation client-server. Map images are georeferenced, which ensures correctness of geographical information.


Format

You can choose JPEG or PNG format of background map. JPEG does not support overlay.


When creating WMS connection, XML file is saved to selected directory on your harddisk. We advice to save it to the Map directory of Field-Map project.

  1. Click the Background map button



  1. Select Tools - Create WMS Layer Connection menu item



  1. Add WMS Layer window appears
  2. Type in WMS server address
  3. Set Spatial Reference System
    1. Choose it from the list of already defined SRS
    2. Add new/Edit already listed SRS by clicking on Edit list of SRS button
  4. Choose WMS Layer to be used as background map
  5. Choose format of image and overlay effect



  1. When you click on Edit list of SRS button, then window appears
  2. You can edit it. Select a record
  3. If you can delete a record click the Delete SRS button
  4. If you can add a record click the Add New SRS button



  1. When adding/editing SRS parameters, set its prefix, code and optionally caption

Prefix and Code conclusively define the reference system, caption will be visible in the list of SRS and will help you to circumnavigate for desired system

  1. Click Info button to open web page with the list of cartographical systems and their respective codes



  1. Click Save button. Set the folder to save file with definition of WMS layer connection



  1. Map window appears. Click Background map button and select Open Background Map - WMS Layer



  1. Select the file and click Open button



  1. Background map from WMS server appears in map window
