4.15 Numeric lookup list versus Alphanumeric and GUID lookup lists
Working with layer attributes > Numeric lookup list versus Alphanumeric and GUID lookup lists
Numeric lookup lists (where ID may only consist of numbers) are mostly used for ordinal scale attributes such as “Decomposition degree”, “Damage level” etc., but they are also useful if you need to have a long list of items where an abbreviation such as “Species” would not work.

Alphanumeric lookup lists are preferably used where abbreviations are well known and are not duplicates such as for “Counties” or “Chemical elements”. ID may consist of numbers and characters. The size of alphanumeric IDs is limited to 5 characters.

GUID lookup lists are used in projects with a possibility of more users adding records to lookup table independently. The primary key is generated automatically and cannot be edited by user.
