The data layer in Field-Map is used for the data which is related to the main layers (plot, trees, etc.). By using data layers in combination with other layer types it is possible to build a complex relational structure of multi-level database. 

Both one-to-many and one-to-one relations are supported for connecting data layers to the parent layer.
